Your guess is as good as mine. I think it’s probably harmless fun. It is a phenomenon made possible in the modern trading environment by the transparency of trading statistics, live, online. No so long ago, relatively few industry professionals knew at any point in time what the bid/ask/volume metrics were, live. Now most retail investors and day traders have access to this information. As long as the issuer has no hand in this, and there is no ulterior motive, there is probably no harm done. Think of it as a new arena for personal creativity.
